Back Again

Hi everyone. Thanks for stopping by. It has been an adventuresome week. The dog and I were driving up the highway yesterday when a State of Ohio dump truck merged into the Subaru. This was one of the big ones they plow the interstate with. Yikes it was thrilling as we spun around and got pushed down the road sideways then spun over a steep embankment. Both man and dog came through without a scratch but I don't know how we kept from rolling over. The car is pretty cut up on the passenger side and my insurance company and the State of Ohio are sorting out who pays for what. Hopefully it will all come out in the end.

My friends Mike and Karen had their photo both set up the other day and invited me over so I could update my photos for shows. These are better than what I had but could still be improved. It won't hurt my feelings if you have suggestions on which ones to use or how to make them better. If you don't tell me who will? Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Awesome photos. So sorry the car got totaled, and I'm relieved (not half as much as you are) that no one was hurt.

  2. 2nd photo needs deeper depth of field. Last one looks over saturated.

    1. Thanks Kate. I was shooting wide open without a lot of light. Funny thing about the last one is the pot actually looks just like that! It's a flashy one.

  3. Ugh, poor Subaru! You didn't roll because you were in a really safe car probably!
Photos: love the brown jug and vase and the green dinner ware set. The other photos need a little crop in the lower right hand corner. The two mugs will be great once you crop out the corner. Do you have photoshop or a photo editing tool? If so, bump up your shadows, then bring down the highlights and the exposure just a tad, bump up the sharpness. The foreground is definitely too hot and distracts from your nice pottery. You might just be able to crop that hot spot out on a couple.
At least they are in focus, not like half of what I shoot these days, haha!
Very pretty pottery but for applications, you want the photos to show how great your work is :)
Good luck with that insurance, I have a personal rant for insurance companies right now....

    1. Thanks Tracey. Good to have input from someone whose pictures are always perfect.Insurance is weird. Since it is a claim against the State my insurance pays it without putting a claim on my record then the state pays me my deductible and any out of pocket costs.I HOPE !

  4. I am catching up on blog reading and terrified to hear about your accident! I am glad you and the hairball are safe. Car accidents are not fun, and I hope you are not having residual pain. As I have told people (having had a bad car accident), don't settle for at least a month because the pain can creep up on you. Adrenaline has an incredible way of keeping the pain at bay from the sheer excitement of the accident.

As to the photos. I agree with others on the first two not having enough depth of field. What is the booth's set up for lights? Usually you want a filtered light from above or a bounce board to reflect the light because direct light creates harsh shadows (also seen in one and two). I use a bounce board, but am thinking when the barn is done I am going to set up a filtered screen booth. The third photo with the mug, bowl, and dish, is my favorite of them all. The shadows are not bad, caught some good highlights, and the depth of field is pretty good. Definitely don't do flash and see if you can find a camera that changes light setting. A lot of lights with a basic camera will saturate in reds and yellow, but if you have a camera with a tungsten setting, it helps get more true color (also depends on the light bulbs).
