Yesterday the studio was invaded by Girls Scouts. Not big Girls, 7 and 8 year old wiggly giggly bundles of energy. I had been cleaning all week and while I wouldn't eat off the floor ( unless it was a cookie) I thought things looked pretty good. I ended up with 7 girls and 2 moms. Given my available space, that was plenty. It was going to be an hour or so but they came early and we had so much fun they stayed late. We ended up with about a 2 1/2 hr. visit. The girls were mostly interested and had lots of questions which always makes it better. I explained a bit about materials and process, then demonstrated cylinders, baking dishes , trimming, and handles. The last job was to make some "Happy Clams" that I will fire and get back to them. It was a fun fun day for me and I think the girls had a ball too. Now for the part you all like best.....
These girls will always have a great memory of the day they went to your pottery and perhaps one or two will be inspired to be potters.
ReplyDeleteThose Happy Clams are a brilliant idea. I'm going to pass that on to Beth who teaches the kids classes at LT. :)
ReplyDeleteJust pinch the cheeks Anna. Add eyes and a tongue for a clam. Add fins for a fish or legs for a frog! almost FOOLPROOF. Michele. When they come home from college and announce to Dad that they are using a $200K education for a 60 hour a week job with no insurance and they might make as much as $20K a year, I don't want my name involved!
ReplyDeleteThe entire troop (adults included) looks entranced! Potters are alchemists!! I've done the clay merit badges a couple of times. Each time it was fun and inspiring.! Love the clams!
ReplyDeleteNice work, Dennis. Paying it forward is very satisfying!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great experience for all of you - such a sweet thing to do Dennis, I love seeing how entranced they are. You are obviously a great teacher!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ya'll. I had as much fun as they did.
ReplyDeleteKids and clay equal some fun!
ReplyDeleteI hope they enjoyed it as much as you.
Try number four! I left three comments that never wanted to post, grrr.
ReplyDeleteI love that these girl scouts came to visit you. I was a scout all the way through high school and learned more from scouting than I did from school or my parents. Its a great thing and these girls will have this memory for a lifetime, that is for sure. Good for you for hosting them! Wish my scout troop had visited a potter, I might have gotten started sooner. We did do a lot of camping though :)
Thanks M I know they had fun too. Tracey thanks for the effort. I teach the kids classes at a local art center but this was even more fun since we weren't on the clock. Our kids didn't do scouts but boy did we do 4-H.It helped give them the leadership skills they have today.Tina was dog adviser and still judges at State Fair. I chaperoned trips to Washington DC and showed the kids off to congressmen and senators. 2 adults 50 kids loose in DC and NEVER a problem.
ReplyDeleteThat is great! Hope they left you a box of peanut butter cookies :)
